Intro to Puerto Rico Research Paper

The United States faliure to aid Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico and the United States have had their share of intertwined history. The Americans took over what was once a Spanish colony after a long war and obtained an island that would connect them to the Caribbean islands. Puerto Rico was seen as an economical opportunity for the United States to grant them access to their South American trade partners and serves as a country to support the Caribbean people. However, the United States fails to treat the island of Puerto Rico as one of its own states and provide help to the people that they "sometimes" considered their citizens. In times of crisis, Puerto Rico is unable to support its own economy since they are constantly facing natural disasters and economical issues and seek aid from their controlling nation. But, the U.S. has yet to show that the laws that they established since their control of the island have brought aid in times of need and provides Puerto Ricans with laws that will treat them in a fair manner. For example, during the Hurricane of 2017, the island was without power or running water, causing them to look towards the United States to help them get their island back up and running. However, the matter was silenced by the federal government in the U.S. and left the island untreated for a dangerously long period of time. During that time frame, Puerto Rico had to run hospitals off of generators, children were unable to go to school, and families were unable to work since they could not get any form of electricity to their much-needed machinery. Even though the cries of their citizens were heard, they turned their backs on the island but still need it for their own benefit. The U.S. is acting upon traditions that were used in the late 1400s when Christopher Colombus first stepped foot on Caribbean soil and began to exploit the native population for the own benefit of the Spanish inquisition. Colonization and imperialism have long been ended around the world but the U.S. is still acting upon the colonial and imperialistic ideals that were
prominent from the 1400s to the end of World War II.

  1. Your blog is very nice but it needs a little bit of work. Your blog needs a couple pictures and the paragraphs need to be spaced out to make the post look less cluttered. Other than that, your post meets the criteria and it's very informative. Your page is very sleek and well put together.
