So, from history, we know that Puerto Rico was one of the first Islands to be colonized by the Spanish. As a result of the colonization era, people from Spain were constantly coming back and forth between the island and Europe, bringing their culture with them. In addition to European culture, the slaves that were being moved into the islands as a result of slave trading, each carrying their own distinct cultures and traditions. To top it off, you also had the indigenous people of the island, the Tiano, with their own culture. With all three main groups of people, regardless of population size, the cultures began to mix together and create what we see throughout the island of Puerto Rico.

The food found on the island is a mixture of dishes that originate from Spain and the Tiano people. The Tiano people were able to create food from what they had on the island and the Spanish brought with them spices and meats to further the islands overall food diversity. The island has multiple unique dishes that have given the island its own identity in the culinary category. Two of the most famous dishes from Puerto Rico are Tostones and Arroz con Gandulas which are mainly made from some for of plant. Tostones are made from thin plantain slices which are then fried and can be accompanied with either ketchup or other condiments. It mainly serves as a quick snack if you are craving something salty. Arroz con Gandulas is considered the national food of the island, made up of rice and sofrito, what makes the dish so unique, with the option of adding peas or olives. Sofirto is the base that give the rice its unique flavor and texture. 

Puerto Rico's unique culture has constantly been changing with the introduction of the United States on the island. Due to this, the food, clothes, and music have all been changing in order to adopt the characteristics that are shown by the American people. In other words, Puerto Rico has become a small but important location for the integration of many cultures. 

However, due to the influence of the United States and their overall enforcement of the island, Puerto Rico has had moments where their economy has failed as a result of outside influence. In 1917, the United States allowed investors to increase the sugar and tobacco production at the time. This rapid increase in crop production caused large amounts of economic change, but it could not help the social life of the Puerto Ricans. Thus, causing a large migration of Puerto Ricans to the United States in order to find a better life for them and their families.

       So, let's start nice and simple. My name is Jonathan Martinez, I am born and raised here in Georgia. For the most part, I do what almost every other regular person does once they graduate high school. I work 60% of my day and devote the last 40% to school life, not much excitement. Here came the Santa Maria

Chrstopher Columbus and his crew first set sail west of Spain in 1492 in hopes of discoverying a faster and for effiecent trade route to India. However, once the Italian found caught sight of land, it was not what he was looking for. Columbus had came in contact with the continets of North America and South America, landing somewhere near the  Bahamas. After trading with the islands native population and returning back to Spain, Columbus planned another trip in 1493 back to the West and came in contact with the island that we know today as Puerto Rico. The original population of this Caribbean Island were the Tiano people who called the island "Borike," but with the introduction of the Spanish, their population was quickly decreased to the point of near extinction as a result of diseases.
